"Jake Heggie’s "Songs to the Moon, Part 1: Fairy Tales for the Children" gained Roth’s attention; songs they are of greater emotional variety though still fantastical in nature, being set to poems by Vachel Lindsay about "The Haughty Snail-King," "What the Rattlesnake Said," and "The Moon’s the North Wind’s Cooky." Roth’s appropriately dramatic approach made one think, as would a child, that here was music of grand topical consequence."
